New York Mills, population 1,230, is located in the northeastern part of Otter Tail County, the heart of Minnesota Lake Country. Within minutes of a host of excellent fishing and recreation lakes, you can enjoy all four seasons this area has to offer. New York Mills has the finest facilities to be found in a community of its size, including six excellent parks (one with camping and RV hookups), a heated outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a ice skating rink, an outstanding public library, a full-service medical clinic, a first-rate school system and a comfortable, modern nursing home facility. The New York Mills School District is proud to house the James W. Mann Performing Art Center, a state-of-the-art facility which offers events ranging from school sponsored events to community events such as a ballet performances, vocal performances and community plays. The city is also home to the nationally renowned Regional Cultural Center, which hosts "The Great American Think-off". The world's largest Ronald McDonald benefit ride occurs here each year. In 2016, 1,025 motorcycles participated in the event, raising $161,242 for the Fargo Ronald McDonald House. The Ride has raised over 1/4 million dollars in the last 15 years! While visiting the community, you'll want to visit the Continental Divide Monument commemorating the location of the city on the continental divide and the flags of seven nations, which have flown over the land.
Housing in New York Mills includes many newer rental housing facilities, including a condominium complex and a beautiful assisted living facility. Picturesque Country View Addition is a housing development tucked back on the outskirts of town, complete with city infrastructure and a new playground. The majestic City Hall building is home to the city offices, the municipal liquor store, the senior center and the city's beautiful ballroom facility. New York Mills is also the home of Lund Boats. The Lund trademark is regarded as a symbol of quality to all in the boating industry, and Lund boats are a common sight on the lakes of Minnesota as well as around the world. The city's beginning came in 1884 as a small village whose settlement began with several lumber mills from New York, (which were built to harvest the majestic white pines which used to blanket the area).
