NOTICE-Monitor Your Water Temperatures
NOTICE:
The City of New York Mills advises all utility customers to take measures to prevent water service line freeze ups. Per Ordinance No. 117, utility service lines are the responsibility of the property owner from the main to the building.
PREVENT FROZEN WATER LINES
To prevent a freeze up, continuous running of water in your building or home is recommended once your water temperatures from your cold water tap are in the 40 degree or colder range. Before you call that you are running water, check the temperature. Let the water run for approximately 5 minutes to clear the water that is currently in your house lines. Then check the temperature with a meat thermometer or other instrument that reads temperatures in the needed range.
It is recommended that you run a stream of water about the size of a pencil (not a pencil lead…rather a wooden pencil itself). KEEP WATER RUNNING 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK IN ONE FAUCET. This size stream of water is expected to amount to about 10,000 to 12,000 gallons of water in a month’s time.
Another way to determine if you are running the correct amount is to fill up an empty gallon milk jug and see how long that takes. It should take about 4 minutes, at the rate of ¼ gallon per minute.
NOTIFY THE CITY if you are running your water as recommended. Your water and sewer bills will be adjusted to reflect your normal monthly usage. As outdoor temperatures warm, the frost level can be driven further into the ground. PRIOR TO STOPPING THIS PRACTICE, check to see if the City has lifted this run water recommendation. A notice will be posted on our Facebook page and the City website. (www.newyorkmills.govoffice2.com)
